Muscle Soreness & DOMS

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is the aching, stiffness, and tenderness felt 12-72 hours after unfamiliar or intense exercise. It results from microscopic muscle fiber damage and the resulting inflammatory repair response. DOMS typically resolves on its own within 3-5 days without treatment.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if pain is severe or localised to one muscle group, if swelling or significant bruising develops, if urine turns dark brown (possible rhabdomyolysis), or if soreness does not improve within 7 days.
