Curcumin (Turmeric Extract)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis in Phytotherapy Research (Beba et al., PMID 35574627) of RCTs found curcumin supplementation significantly reduced muscle soreness scores, creatine kinase activity, and TNF-alpha levels following exercise-induced muscle damage.$20-$45 for a month's supply depending on brand and formulation.

How to use

Take 500-1500 mg of curcumin (as standardised extract, 95% curcuminoids) daily in divided doses with meals. Choose a formulation with piperine (black pepper extract) or in a phospholipid complex (e.g. Meriva) to significantly enhance absorption. Begin 1-2 days before exercise if possible.

How it works

Curcumin inhibits NF-kB signalling, reducing transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-alpha and COX-2. It also scavenges reactive oxygen species generated during exercise-induced muscle damage, limiting the secondary inflammatory cascade responsible for DOMS pain.

Where to buy

Thorne Meriva-SF, Doctor's Best High Absorption Curcumin, or Life Extension Super Bio-Curcumin at iHerb, Amazon, or health food stores.

Typical cost: $20-$45 for a month's supply depending on brand and formulation.

Safety notes

May interact with anticoagulant medications (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel) - consult a doctor if taking blood thinners. Avoid at high doses during pregnancy. Can cause mild GI upset; take with food. High doses may interfere with iron absorption.
