Epsom Salt Bath
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Dissolve 2 cups (approx. 500 g) of Epsom salt in a warm bath (38-40 C / 100-104 F). Soak for 15-20 minutes, 1-2 times daily in the days following strenuous exercise. Ensure the water is warm but not uncomfortably hot.
How it works
Warm water immersion increases local blood flow and tissue temperature, helping to clear metabolic waste products and reduce muscle stiffness. The relaxation response also lowers perceived pain. Transdermal magnesium absorption, though popular in marketing, is not reliably demonstrated.
Where to buy
Dr Teal's or Epsoak Epsom Salt available at CVS, Walmart, Target, or Amazon for approximately $5-$12 per 3 lb bag.
Typical cost: $5-$12 per bag; a single bath uses roughly 2 cups.
Safety notes
Avoid very hot water if you have cardiovascular conditions, are pregnant, or have low blood pressure. Do not ingest Epsom salt (laxative effect at even small doses). Keep water temperature safe to prevent burns or overheating.
