Athlete's Foot

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Tinea pedis is a superficial fungal infection of the feet caused by dermatophytes - most commonly Trichophyton rubrum. Presents as itching, burning, scaling, and maceration between the toes, with possible blistering or plantar involvement. Highly contagious in shared wet environments.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if infection spreads to toenails, the top of the foot, or groin; if you develop blistering, pain, or signs of secondary bacterial infection (redness, warmth, pus); or if you are diabetic or immunocompromised. Also seek care if OTC antifungals haven't worked after 4 weeks.
