Foot Hygiene and Dry Environment
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Wash feet daily with soap and water; dry thoroughly between every toe after washing or any water exposure. Wear moisture-wicking synthetic or wool socks, changed at least once daily. Choose breathable leather or mesh shoes; alternate pairs to allow drying. Never share towels, socks, or footwear. Wear flip-flops in shared showers, locker rooms, and pool areas. Dust feet and shoe interiors with antifungal powder (miconazole or clotrimazole) daily during active infection.
How it works
Dermatophytes responsible for tinea pedis require a warm, moist environment to germinate spores and penetrate the stratum corneum. Eliminating moisture between the toes removes the primary growth condition. Keeping shoes dry between uses allows the internal environment to drop below the humidity threshold required for fungal survival and sporulation.
Where to buy
Antifungal foot powder (Zeasorb-AF, Gold Bond Medicated) at pharmacies. Moisture-wicking socks (Darn Tough, Smartwool) at outdoor retailers.
Typical cost: $0-$15 (behaviour change is free; powder and quality socks are low-cost)
Safety notes
Lifestyle measures alone are insufficient to cure an established fungal infection - combine with a topical antifungal agent. Diabetes or peripheral vascular disease increases foot infection risk significantly; those patients should consult a podiatrist for personalised advice.
