Heartburn & Acid Reflux (GERD)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest, regurgitation, and sometimes a sour taste in the mouth. It affects up to 20% of adults in Western countries. Mild cases respond well to lifestyle changes and natural interventions, while persistent symptoms require medical evaluation.
See a doctor if you have difficulty swallowing, unintentional weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, chest pain radiating to the arm or jaw, or if symptoms persist more than 2 weeks despite treatment. These may indicate esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus, or cardiac causes.
