Probiotic Supplements (Lactobacillus / Bifidobacterium)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Choose a multi-strain product containing at least one Lactobacillus and one Bifidobacterium species with a minimum of 10 billion CFU per dose, and a product that lists colony-forming unit counts at expiry (not just at manufacture). Take daily with or shortly before a meal, since food buffers stomach acid and improves bacterial survival. Store as directed - many products require refrigeration. Use for at least 4-8 weeks to assess effect.
How it works
Supplemental Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains transiently colonize the colon, compete with pathogenic bacteria for adhesion sites and nutrients, produce lactic acid and bacteriocins that shift pH and inhibit pathogen growth, and stimulate mucus production and immune signaling in the gut epithelium.
Where to buy
Pharmacies (Culturelle, Align, Garden of Life, Renew Life), health food stores, and online. Look for refrigerated products or those with demonstrated shelf stability, and third-party certification (NSF, USP, or ConsumerLab tested) to verify label accuracy.
Typical cost: $20-45/month
Safety notes
The FDA issued a 2023 safety warning: do not give probiotic supplements to premature or critically ill infants due to risk of severe or fatal infection. People with compromised immune systems (HIV, organ transplant, active chemotherapy, severe illness) should consult their physician before use - rare but serious infections from probiotic organisms have been reported in immunocompromised individuals. Some probiotic strains carry antibiotic resistance genes; if taking antibiotics, separate probiotic intake by at least 2 hours. Some products contain dairy, gluten, or soy - check labels if you have allergies.
