Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA + EPA)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 1000-2000 mg combined EPA+DHA daily from a purified fish oil or algae-based supplement. Take with the largest meal of the day to improve absorption and reduce fishy reflux. Supplement for at least 60 days before conception. Algae-based DHA is appropriate for vegetarians and safe to continue into pregnancy.
How it works
DHA is a structural component of oocyte membranes and the zona pellucida; adequate membrane DHA improves fertilization competence and early embryo development. EPA and DHA also reduce prostaglandin-driven inflammation in the endometrium, which may improve implantation conditions. DHA is critical for fetal neural and retinal development in the first trimester, making preconception loading beneficial.
Where to buy
Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA, Carlson Labs Fish Oil, and Wiley's Finest Wild Alaskan Fish Oil are reputable brands with third-party purity testing. Algae-based options include Ovega-3 and Nordic Naturals Algae Omega. Available at pharmacies, health stores, Amazon, and iHerb. Look for IFOS or USP certification.
Typical cost: $20-$45/month for a 1000-2000 mg EPA+DHA dose
Safety notes
At doses above 3 g/day, omega-3s can mildly increase bleeding time - inform your surgeon or OB before any procedure. Choose molecularly distilled or certified low-mercury products, especially if using fish-based oils preconception. Algae-based DHA is the safer choice for those wanting to continue supplementation into pregnancy. Omega-3s alone are not a treatment for structural causes of infertility.
