St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

NCCIH reports that multiple studies and systematic reviews show St. John's Wort is more effective than placebo and as effective as standard antidepressants for mild-to-moderate depression, though evidence for severe depression is weak.$10-$25 for a 30-day supply

How to use

Take 300 mg three times daily of a standardised extract containing 0.3% hypericin, for a total of 900 mg/day. Allow 4-6 weeks for benefit. Do not combine with prescription antidepressants under any circumstances.

How it works

Hyperforin, the primary active compound, inhibits neuronal reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, GABA, and glutamate simultaneously - a broader reuptake inhibition profile than most prescription antidepressants.

Where to buy

Nature's Way Perika (standardised to 5% hyperforin), Schwabe Pharma's Kira, and Solgar St. John's Wort are reputable standardised options at pharmacies, Whole Foods, and Amazon.

Typical cost: $10-$25 for a 30-day supply

Safety notes

CRITICAL: Combining St. John's Wort with SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, MAOIs, or any serotonergic drug can cause serotonin syndrome. It significantly reduces blood levels of oral contraceptives, warfarin, HIV medications, cyclosporin, and many other drugs via CYP450 induction. Can cause photosensitivity (sunburn more easily). Not for use in pregnancy or severe depression.
