Saffron (Crocus sativus)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 30 mg per day of a standardised saffron extract (typically 15 mg twice daily) with meals. The 30 mg/day dose has been used consistently across clinical trials. Allow 6-8 weeks for full effect.
How it works
Active compounds crocin and safranal inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in a manner similar to conventional antidepressants, while also reducing cortisol levels and exerting anti-inflammatory effects on the nervous system.
Where to buy
Pharmavite saffron extract, Natrium Health saffron, and Solgar Advanced Saffron are standardised options available on Amazon and iHerb. Ensure products specify >=2% safranal content.
Typical cost: $25-$50 for a 60-day supply
Safety notes
Doses above 5 g/day can be toxic; do not exceed recommended amounts. May interact with antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and anticoagulants. Avoid during pregnancy at medicinal doses as it may stimulate the uterus. Not suitable for use with MAOIs.
