Lactobacillus plantarum 299v

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Ducrothe P et al. 2012 World Journal of Gastroenterology (PMID 22912552) - 4-week RCT found Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (10 billion CFU/day) produced 'excellent' or 'good' symptom relief in 78.1% of IBS patients vs 8.1% in the placebo group (p < 0.05); abdominal pain scores improved significantly.$20-35/month

How to use

Take 10 billion CFU of Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (sold as Probi or LP299V) daily, with or before meals, for at least 4 weeks. Products containing specifically the 299v strain perform better in IBS research than generic probiotic blends. Refrigerated formulations maintain viability better than room-temperature versions.

How it works

Lactobacillus plantarum 299v adheres to the intestinal mucosa and competes with pathogenic bacteria for binding sites. It reduces intestinal permeability, modulates the gut-brain axis, decreases pro-inflammatory cytokines in the gut mucosa, and improves mucus layer integrity. The 299v strain specifically produces mannose-binding proteins that inhibit E. coli adhesion.

Where to buy

Probi Digestis (Lactobacillus plantarum 299v, 10B CFU) at Whole Foods, iHerb, and Amazon ($20-35). Verify the product states Lactobacillus plantarum 299v specifically on the label - strain specificity matters for IBS evidence.

Typical cost: $20-35/month

Safety notes

Generally very safe for healthy adults. Use caution in severely immunocompromised individuals or those with short bowel syndrome or central venous catheters (rare risk of bacteremia). May cause temporary bloating and gas in the first 1-2 weeks as gut flora adjusts. Other probiotic strains may not have equivalent evidence for IBS - the 299v strain designation is important.
