Gut Health & IBS

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gut disorder affecting 10-15% of adults, characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits (constipation, diarrhea, or mixed). It is diagnosed by symptoms after ruling out structural disease. The gut-brain axis plays a central role.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if symptoms are new or recently changed, if you notice blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, anemia, or symptoms that wake you from sleep. These may indicate inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, or colorectal cancer. IBS diagnosis requires ruling out other causes first.
