Omega-3 Fish Oil

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2023 meta-analysis by Deng et al. in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research pooled 9 RCTs involving 2,070 osteoarthritis patients and found that omega-3 PUFA supplementation significantly relieved arthritis pain and improved joint function versus placebo, with no serious adverse effects.$25-$50 for a 60-day supply

How to use

Take 2-4 g/day of combined EPA + DHA (e.g., 2 capsules of a standard 1000 mg fish oil providing 600 mg EPA + DHA). Take with a meal. Higher-dose concentrated fish oil products may be needed to reach the therapeutic range.

How it works

EPA and DHA are incorporated into synovial membrane phospholipids, reducing the production of arachidonic-acid-derived inflammatory eicosanoids (prostaglandin E2, leukotriene B4) within joint tissue. They also promote synthesis of anti-inflammatory resolvins and protectins.

Where to buy

Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Carlson Super Omega-3, and OmegaVia EPA 500 are high-potency options available at Costco, iHerb, pharmacies, and Amazon.

Typical cost: $25-$50 for a 60-day supply

Safety notes

Doses above 3 g/day total omega-3 can increase bleeding time; consult a doctor if taking anticoagulants or before surgery. May have a modest blood-pressure-lowering effect. Fish-derived - check for shellfish allergy. Fishy aftertaste is common; store in fridge and use enteric-coated capsules to minimise this.
