Curcumin (Turmeric Extract)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis by Zeng et al. in Frontiers in Immunology analysed 29 RCTs involving 2,396 participants and concluded that curcumin reduces arthritis pain and improves physical function across multiple arthritis subtypes, with a safety profile comparable to or better than NSAIDs.$20-$45 for a 60-day supply

How to use

Take 500-1000 mg of curcumin extract (standardised to 95% curcuminoids) twice daily with meals. Bioavailability is poor without enhancers - choose formulations containing piperine (BioPerine), phytosomes (Meriva), or nanoparticle delivery systems (Theracurmin). Allow 4-8 weeks.

How it works

Curcumin inhibits NF-kB, a master transcription factor for pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6. It also inhibits COX-2 and LOX enzymes, reducing prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis in joint tissue.

Where to buy

Thorne Meriva-SF (phytosome form), Life Extension Super Bio-Curcumin, and Doctor's Best Curcumin with BioPerine are well-evidenced bioavailable formulations available on iHerb and Amazon.

Typical cost: $20-$45 for a 60-day supply

Safety notes

High doses (above 8 g/day) may cause gastrointestinal upset. Can interact with blood thinners (warfarin) and antiplatelet drugs - use with caution. May affect metabolism of some chemotherapy agents. Avoid at medicinal doses in pregnancy. Piperine-containing formulas can affect absorption of many drugs; space dosing 2 hours apart.
