Boswellia Serrata Extract

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis by Yu et al. in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies analysed 7 RCTs of 545 osteoarthritis patients and found Boswellia significantly relieved pain and stiffness and improved joint function, recommending at least 4 weeks of use at 100-250 mg/day.$15-$35 for a 60-day supply

How to use

Take 100-250 mg of a standardised Boswellia serrata extract (containing at least 30% AKBA - acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) daily with food. Products vary in AKBA content; check labels carefully. Use for a minimum of 4-8 weeks.

How it works

Boswellic acids, particularly AKBA, selectively inhibit 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), blocking leukotriene synthesis. Unlike NSAIDs, Boswellia does not inhibit COX enzymes and therefore does not damage the gastrointestinal mucosa. It also reduces cartilage-degrading metalloprotease activity.

Where to buy

NOW Foods Boswellia Extract, Jarrow Formulas Boswellia (standardised to 65% boswellic acids), and Solgar Boswellia Resin Extract are widely available at iHerb, Whole Foods, and Amazon.

Typical cost: $15-$35 for a 60-day supply

Safety notes

Generally well tolerated. Mild gastrointestinal effects (nausea, stomach upset) reported in some users. Limited safety data in pregnancy and lactation - avoid. Potential interactions with anticoagulants are theoretically possible. Quality varies widely between products; choose standardised extracts.
