Increased Water Intake

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Hooton et al. (2018, PMID 30285042) RCT (n=140 premenopausal women with recurrent UTI and low baseline fluid intake) found adding 1.5 L water/day reduced mean annual cystitis episodes from 3.2 to 1.7 and extended infection-free interval from 84 to 143 days.Free

How to use

Aim to drink enough water to keep urine pale yellow - typically 2-3 litres of total fluid per day. Spread intake throughout the day. Urinate after sexual intercourse, which can introduce bacteria into the urethra.

How it works

Higher urine volume dilutes uropathogens and increases urination frequency, physically flushing bacteria from the bladder before they can adhere to the urothelium and establish infection.

Where to buy

No purchase needed. Tap water is effective.

Safety notes

Overhydration (more than 4-5 L/day) can dilute serum sodium (hyponatraemia) - this is rare but possible in people with kidney or heart conditions. If you have a condition requiring fluid restriction, follow your doctor's guidance rather than increasing intake.
