Peppermint Oil (Topical)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Dilute food-grade peppermint essential oil to a 10% solution in a carrier oil (1 part peppermint to 9 parts fractionated coconut or jojoba oil) or use a pre-made 10% roll-on. Apply generously to forehead and temples at headache onset, avoiding eyes. Reapply every 15-30 minutes as needed.
How it works
Menthol, the primary active compound, activates TRPM8 cold-receptor channels in skin, producing a cooling sensation that reduces perceived pain via counter-irritation. Menthol also inhibits serotonin receptor 5-HT3 activity and promotes local vasodilation, relieving muscle tension.
Where to buy
Badger Peppermint Headache Soother, Aura Cacia 10% Peppermint Roll-On, and Peppermint Halo by Saje are ready-to-use 10% formulations. Undiluted peppermint oil from NOW Foods or Plant Therapy can be self-diluted.
Typical cost: $8-$20 per roll-on or blend
Safety notes
Never apply undiluted essential oil directly to skin - causes chemical burns and intense irritation. Keep away from eyes, nostrils, and mucous membranes. Do not apply to infants or children under 6 (menthol can cause breathing difficulties). Patch test before widespread use. Oral ingestion of peppermint oil is not the same formulation and is not for headache use.
