Virgin Coconut Oil
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Apply virgin (unrefined, cold-pressed) coconut oil in a thin layer to clean, slightly damp skin 2-3 times daily. Focus on affected and prone areas. Leave on - no need to rinse. For very dry or thickened patches, apply a slightly thicker layer at bedtime under breathable cotton clothing.
How it works
Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid (~50%), which has antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus - a bacterium that colonizes eczema-prone skin and worsens inflammation. It also provides occlusive moisturization that reduces transepidermal water loss and supports skin barrier function.
Where to buy
Viva Naturals Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (~$12 / 16 oz), Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (~$14 / 15 oz), available at grocery stores, pharmacies, and online retailers. Look for "virgin" or "extra virgin" unrefined on the label.
Typical cost: $8-15/month
Safety notes
May cause contact allergy or comedonal acne in some individuals - perform a patch test first. Use only unrefined virgin coconut oil; refined versions lack key bioactive compounds. Not recommended as a standalone treatment for moderate-to-severe flares.
