Berberine

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2015 multicenter RCT (184 patients) found berberine plus lifestyle intervention reduced hepatic fat content by 52.7% vs 36.4% for lifestyle alone, with significant improvements in liver enzymes.$20-$40 per month

How to use

Take 500 mg 2-3 times daily with meals, for a total of 1,000-1,500 mg/day. Take consistently for at least 12-16 weeks. Start with a lower dose to assess GI tolerance.

How it works

Berberine activates AMPK, a cellular energy regulator that reduces fat synthesis in the liver, improves insulin sensitivity, lowers triglycerides, and modulates the gut microbiome to reduce liver fat accumulation.

Where to buy

Health food stores, Amazon, supplement retailers. Brands: Thorne, Pure Encapsulations, NOW Foods.

Typical cost: $20-$40 per month

Safety notes

Can cause GI side effects (nausea, constipation, diarrhea) especially at higher doses. Lowers blood sugar - monitor carefully if diabetic or on glucose-lowering drugs. Avoid during pregnancy. May interact with cyclosporine and other drugs.
