Zinc
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 25-50 mg of zinc (as zinc gluconate or zinc picolinate) daily with food. Blood zinc levels should ideally be tested before supplementing - benefits appear strongest in those with confirmed deficiency.
How it works
Zinc is the most abundant trace element in the cochlea and is essential for auditory function. Deficiency impairs cochlear enzyme activity and neuronal signaling, and correcting low zinc levels may reduce tinnitus severity in deficient individuals.
Where to buy
Pharmacies, health food stores, Amazon - brands like Thorne Zinc Picolinate, NOW Foods Zinc Gluconate, or Garden of Life.
Typical cost: $8-$20 per month
Safety notes
Long-term use above 40 mg/day can deplete copper - consider a zinc-copper balanced formula if supplementing for more than 3 months. May cause nausea if taken on an empty stomach. Do not exceed 50 mg/day without medical guidance.
