Yoga-Based Upper Body Program
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Follow a program of upper-body yoga postures emphasizing stretching, strengthening, and joint alignment of the hands, wrists, shoulders, and upper spine - the JAMA trial used 11 Iyengar-style postures plus relaxation. Practice twice weekly in 60-90 minute sessions for at least 8 weeks. A beginner or therapeutic yoga class works; tell the instructor about your wrists so weight-bearing poses can be modified.
How it works
The postures stretch shortened flexor muscles and fascia in the forearm and hand, improve joint posture up the kinetic chain from wrist to shoulder, and may reduce compressive load on the median nerve. Improved circulation and reduced muscle guarding may also lower inflammation around the tunnel.
Where to buy
Local yoga studios (look for Iyengar or therapeutic yoga), or home programs via Yoga International, Glo, or YouTube channels like Yoga with Adriene.
Typical cost: $0-$60 per month depending on classes vs home practice
Safety notes
Avoid full weight-bearing on extended wrists (plank, downward dog) early on - use fists, forearms, or wedge props instead. Stop any pose that triggers tingling. People with severe carpal tunnel syndrome or thumb weakness should get medical evaluation first.
