Yoga and Targeted Stretching

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Zhu et al. meta-analysis of 18 RCTs: yoga significantly reduced chronic low back pain vs non-exercise at 4-8 weeks (MD -0.83, p<0.00001), 3 months (MD -0.43, p<0.0001), and 6-7 months (MD -0.56, p=0.02). PMID 32870936.Free to $80/month (studio classes)

How to use

Practice yoga 2-3 times per week for at least 8 weeks. Focus on poses that gently lengthen the lumbar spine and strengthen the core: cat-cow, child's pose, supine knee-to-chest, and bridge. Use a certified instructor initially.

How it works

Yoga combines stretching of the thoracolumbar fascia and hip flexors, strengthening of deep spinal stabilisers, and parasympathetic nervous system activation - all of which reduce both the physical and psychological components of chronic pain.

Where to buy

No purchases required. Free classes on YouTube (Yoga With Adriene has a dedicated back pain series). In-person classes at gyms or yoga studios cost $10-$20 per session.

Typical cost: Free to $80/month (studio classes)

Safety notes

Avoid high-impact or deep twist poses during a pain flare. Tell your instructor about your back pain so they can modify poses. Stop any movement that causes sharp or radiating pain.
