Vitex (Chasteberry / Vitex agnus-castus)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Csupor et al. meta-analysis of 3 double-blind RCTs (n=520): women taking standardised VAC extract were 2.57 times more likely to achieve symptom remission vs placebo (95% CI 1.52-4.35). PMID 31780016.$15-$40 per month

How to use

Take 20-40 mg of a standardised chasteberry extract (Ze 440 or BNO 1095) once daily in the morning, consistently throughout the month - not just in the luteal phase. Allow at least 3 menstrual cycles to assess benefit.

How it works

Vitex binds to dopamine D2 receptors in the pituitary gland, suppressing prolactin secretion. Elevated prolactin is associated with breast tenderness and luteal phase deficiency; normalising it improves PMS symptom clusters.

Where to buy

Health food stores and pharmacies. Look for standardised extracts (Ze 440 or Agnucaston). Available from Vitanica, Nature's Way, and Gaia Herbs.

Typical cost: $15-$40 per month

Safety notes

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid with hormonal contraceptives or dopamine-related medications. May cause mild nausea, headache, or skin reactions. Takes 3+ months for full effect.
