Vitex Agnus-Castus (Chasteberry)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Csupor et al. 2019 Complement Ther Med (PMID 31780016) - Meta-analysis of 3 double-blind RCTs (n=520 women) found women taking Vitex agnus-castus were 2.57 times more likely to experience symptom remission than placebo (95% CI 1.52-4.35); standardized extracts Ze 440 and BNO 1095 were used.$15-28 per month

How to use

Take 20 mg of standardized dry extract (Ze 440 or equivalent, standardized to casticin) once daily in the morning, or 4 mg of native dry extract (BNO 1095) once daily. Take consistently every day, not just before your period. Allow 3 full menstrual cycles (about 3 months) to assess effectiveness. Do not take intermittently.

How it works

Vitex binds to dopamine D2 receptors in the pituitary gland, reducing prolactin secretion. Elevated prolactin is associated with breast tenderness, irregular cycles, and mood disturbance. Vitex also contains compounds with mild progesterogenic activity and may help normalize the estrogen-to-progesterone ratio in the luteal phase.

Where to buy

Nature's Way Vitex Fruit 400 mg (~$12-18/100 caps), Gaia Herbs Vitex Berry liquid capsules (~$20-28), Vitanica Fem Rebalance (~$22-28). Look for products standardized to 0.5% agnuside or 0.6% aucubin. Available at Whole Foods, Vitamin Shoppe, iHerb, Amazon.

Typical cost: $15-28 per month

Safety notes

Do not use if pregnant or trying to conceive - may interfere with implantation and has uterine-stimulating properties. Do not use while breastfeeding. Avoid if taking hormonal contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, dopamine-related medications (antipsychotics, Parkinson's drugs), or medications for hyperprolactinemia. May cause mild nausea, headache, or rash in some women. Not appropriate for PMDD - consult a physician.
