Vitamin D3 Supplementation

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 12-month randomized controlled trial found men supplementing with vitamin D3 had significantly higher testosterone levels at year end, with total testosterone rising from 10.7 to 13.4 nmol/L in the supplemented group.$5-$12 per month

How to use

Take 2,000-4,000 IU vitamin D3 daily with a fat-containing meal for optimal absorption. Get baseline 25(OH)D blood levels tested - benefits are most pronounced in men who are deficient (below 20 ng/mL).

How it works

Vitamin D receptors are expressed in Leydig cells (the testosterone-producing cells of the testes). Vitamin D directly supports the enzyme machinery responsible for testosterone synthesis and may also modulate sex hormone-binding globulin, affecting free testosterone availability.

Where to buy

Pharmacies, grocery stores, Amazon - widely available; choose D3 (cholecalciferol) over D2 (ergocalciferol) for better bioavailability.

Typical cost: $5-$12 per month

Safety notes

Vitamin D is fat-soluble and can accumulate - do not exceed 10,000 IU daily without medical supervision. Get levels tested before high-dose supplementation. Evidence is strongest in vitamin D-deficient men.
