Vitamin D3 Supplementation

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2016 randomized controlled trial in the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology found that vitamin D3 supplementation (50,000 IU weekly for 8 weeks) significantly reduced total nasal symptom scores compared to placebo in allergic rhinitis patients.$8-$20 per month

How to use

Take 2,000-4,000 IU vitamin D3 daily with a meal containing fat for better absorption. Test blood levels first (25-OH vitamin D) and target 40-60 ng/mL.

How it works

Vitamin D receptors are present on nearly all immune cells. Adequate vitamin D promotes regulatory T cell function and shifts immune balance away from the Th2-skewed allergic response, reducing IgE-mediated reactions to allergens.

Where to buy

Pharmacies, health food stores, Amazon - NatureWise, Thorne, NOW Foods. Often paired with K2 for better absorption and safety.

Typical cost: $8-$20 per month

Safety notes

Get blood levels tested before high-dose supplementation. Excess vitamin D (above 10,000 IU/day long-term) can cause hypercalcemia. Interacts with some heart and seizure medications.
