Turmeric / Curcumin

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Daily et al. 2016 systematic review (J Med Food, PMID 27533649) - 8 RCTs found curcumin preparations significantly reduced OA pain and inflammation versus placebo, with one trial showing equivalence to ibuprofen for knee OA at 6 weeks with superior GI tolerability.$20-$45/month depending on bioavailability form.

How to use

Take 400-600 mg of curcumin extract (standardised to 95% curcuminoids) three times daily with food, or use a bioavailability-enhanced form (Meriva, BCM-95, or CurcuWIN) at 250-500 mg twice daily. Add black pepper extract (piperine, 5-10 mg) or a fat-rich meal to improve absorption of standard forms.

How it works

Curcumin inhibits NF-kB signalling (a master regulator of inflammatory gene expression), reduces prostaglandin E2 and leukotriene synthesis, and inhibits matrix metalloproteinases that degrade cartilage. At the synovial level, it reduces TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6.

Where to buy

Jarrow Formulas Curcumin 95 ($15-$25/60 capsules), Life Extension Super Bio-Curcumin ($25-$35/60 capsules, BCM-95 form), Thorne Meriva-SF ($35-$45/60 capsules) - available at health food stores and online.

Typical cost: $20-$45/month depending on bioavailability form.

Safety notes

At culinary doses, very safe. At high supplement doses, may interact with anticoagulants (blood-thinning effect). May interfere with iron absorption if taken together - space by 2 hours. High doses can cause GI discomfort (nausea, diarrhoea). Avoid high doses before surgery (antiplatelet effects). Consult doctor if on diabetes or blood-thinning medications.
