Topical Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid Serum)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Apply 3-5 drops of a 10-20% L-ascorbic acid serum to cleansed, dry face each morning before moisturizer and SPF. Start at a lower concentration (10%) if you have sensitive skin. Store in a dark, cool place and discard if the serum turns orange-brown, indicating oxidation.
How it works
Vitamin C is an essential cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase enzymes that stabilize the collagen triple helix. It directly stimulates collagen I and III gene expression in fibroblasts, inhibits matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) collagen breakdown, and neutralizes UV-induced reactive oxygen species before they can damage dermal DNA and protein.
Where to buy
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic (pharmaceutical gold standard, ~$180), Paula's Choice C15 Super Booster (~$49), TruSkin Vitamin C Serum (~$20). Available at Sephora, Dermstore, Amazon, and dermatology offices.
Typical cost: $20-$180 per bottle lasting 1-3 months depending on brand
Safety notes
Can cause tingling or mild irritation, especially at concentrations above 15% - introduce gradually. May increase photosensitivity temporarily; always follow with SPF. Unstable in light and air - use airless pump packaging. Avoid combining with niacinamide in the same application step as some formulations can temporarily reduce efficacy.
