Colloidal Oatmeal Bath

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A literature review by Kurtz & Wallo (J Drugs Dermatol, 2007; PMID 20865844) found colloidal oatmeal demonstrated efficacy for inflammatory skin conditions including atopic dermatitis and drug-induced rash, with an excellent safety record. The FDA has approved colloidal oatmeal as a skin protectant for itching and irritation.$8-$18 per box of bath packets

How to use

Add 1 cup of finely ground colloidal oatmeal (not regular oats) to a lukewarm bath and stir to dissolve. Soak for 15-20 minutes. Pat (do not rub) skin dry afterwards and follow with a fragrance-free moisturiser. Repeat once or twice daily while itching and inflammation persist. Aveeno makes pre-packaged colloidal oatmeal bath packets for convenience.

How it works

Colloidal oatmeal contains avenanthramides, which inhibit nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-kB) activation, reducing production of inflammatory cytokines and histamine in skin cells. Oat beta-glucans form a protective film on skin that reduces moisture loss. Together, these effects soothe itch, reduce redness, and support the skin barrier during healing.

Where to buy

Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment packets (Walmart, CVS, Target, Amazon), Anthony's Colloidal Oatmeal powder (Amazon), Gold Bond Colloidal Oatmeal lotion (Walgreens, CVS). Regular grocery rolled oats ground finely in a blender also work.

Typical cost: $8-$18 per box of bath packets

Safety notes

Oat allergy is rare but possible - discontinue if rash worsens. Ensure bath is lukewarm, not hot, as hot water will worsen sunburn inflammation. The bath floor becomes slippery with oatmeal - use a bath mat and take care when stepping out. Do not use on open or blistered wounds.
