Aloe Vera Gel
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Apply pure aloe vera gel generously to affected skin as often as needed, typically every 2-4 hours during the first 24-48 hours. Use products containing at least 95% aloe vera gel - check the label. Refrigerating the gel before application provides extra cooling relief. Avoid products with alcohol, fragrance, or numbing agents like benzocaine, which can irritate burned skin.
How it works
Aloe vera contains acemannan polysaccharides that reduce prostaglandin production, dampening the inflammatory cascade responsible for sunburn pain and redness. It also contains anthraquinones and saponins with mild analgesic properties, and forms a moisture-sealing layer that prevents trans-epidermal water loss during healing.
Where to buy
Fruit of the Earth 100% Aloe Vera Gel (Walmart, CVS, Target), Seven Minerals Pure Aloe Vera Gel (Amazon), Nature Republic Soothing Aloe Vera Gel (Amazon). Cut leaf available at many grocery stores.
Typical cost: $6-$15 per large bottle
Safety notes
Rare allergic reactions possible, especially in people with latex allergy (cross-reactivity reported). Avoid on open blisters or broken skin. Do not use products containing alcohol as the base, as these worsen dehydration of burned skin. Whole-leaf aloe products may contain aloin, a laxative compound - use gel-only products topically.
