Stinging Nettle Root Extract

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 12-week RCT of 100 BPH patients found Urtica dioica root extract significantly improved IPSS scores, reduced PSA, and lowered inflammatory markers (CRP, MDA) versus placebo (Ghorbanibirgani et al. 2013).$12-$25 per month

How to use

Take 300-360 mg of standardized nettle root extract (Urtica dioica) twice daily. Often sold combined with saw palmetto or pygeum for additive benefit. Allow 6-8 weeks for effect.

How it works

Nettle root contains polysaccharides and lectins that bind to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), reducing free testosterone available to prostate tissue. It also inhibits prostate cell proliferation and has anti-inflammatory effects on the prostatic stroma.

Where to buy

Health food stores and online - often found in prostate health blends; standalone root extract by NOW Foods, Gaia Herbs, or Herb Pharm

Typical cost: $12-$25 per month

Safety notes

Generally well tolerated. Ensure the product specifies root (radix), not aerial parts. May interact with blood pressure medications. Not appropriate as sole therapy for urinary retention.
