Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A randomized double-blind trial by Mittman (1990) in Planta Medica found freeze-dried stinging nettle was rated moderately or highly effective for allergic rhinitis by 58% of participants versus 37% for placebo.$10-$20 per month

How to use

Take 300-600 mg of freeze-dried stinging nettle leaf capsules one to two times daily, starting 1-2 weeks before allergy season. Fresh nettle tea (2-3 cups daily) is an alternative.

How it works

Stinging nettle inhibits several inflammatory pathways involved in allergic responses, including histamine receptors, prostaglandin synthesis, and mast cell activation - acting as a natural multi-pathway anti-inflammatory.

Where to buy

Health food stores, herbal shops, Amazon - brands include Oregon's Wild Harvest, Gaia Herbs, Nature's Way

Typical cost: $10-$20 per month
