Warm Sitz Bath
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Fill a sitz bath basin (or bathtub with 10-15 cm of water) with comfortably warm water - around 40-45 degrees C (104-113 degrees F). Sit for 15-20 minutes. Repeat 2-3 times daily, especially after bowel movements. Pat the area dry gently with a soft towel afterwards.
How it works
Warm water activates a thermosphincteric reflex that relaxes the internal anal sphincter, reducing resting anal canal pressure. This decreases ischemic pain in hemorrhoidal tissue and promotes blood flow. The warmth also soothes local inflammation and reduces perianal muscle spasm.
Where to buy
Sitz bath basins fit over a standard toilet seat and cost $10-$25 at pharmacies. Alternatively, use a standard bathtub.
Typical cost: $10-$25 for a sitz basin (one-time purchase); effectively free to use thereafter.
Safety notes
Water should be warm, not hot - scalding water can worsen inflammation and cause burns. Dry the perianal area completely after soaking; residual moisture can irritate skin. Sitz baths relieve symptoms but do not treat the underlying cause. If bleeding occurs during or after bathing, consult a doctor.
