Selenium Sulfide Shampoo (1-2.5%)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Apply selenium sulfide 1% (OTC) or 2.5% (prescription) shampoo to wet scalp. Lather and leave on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. Use twice weekly for 2-4 weeks to clear flares, then reduce to once weekly for maintenance.
How it works
Selenium sulfide has direct cytostatic effects on scalp keratinocytes (slowing the rapid skin cell turnover that produces flaking) and disrupts Malassezia yeast cell membranes. It also reduces sebum production in hyperactive sebaceous glands.
Where to buy
1% strength available OTC at pharmacies (Selsun Blue). 2.5% strength available by prescription in most countries.
Typical cost: $8-$18 for OTC; prescription cost varies
Safety notes
Can discolor light-coloured or chemically treated hair with prolonged use - rinse thoroughly. Avoid contact with eyes and broken skin. Has a sulphurous odour. Not recommended during pregnancy at higher concentrations - consult a doctor.
