Daily Scalp Massage

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

English et al. 2019 (Eplasty) found self-administered standardized scalp massage (20 min/day for 24 weeks) increased hair thickness and was associated with upregulation of hair growth genes.$0-15 one-time

How to use

Using fingertips (not nails), apply firm but gentle circular pressure across the entire scalp for 4-5 minutes twice daily. Work from temples to crown in small sections. For enhanced effect, perform massage while applying rosemary oil or another topical treatment.

How it works

Mechanical stretching of dermal papilla cells at the base of follicles upregulates genes involved in hair growth (including IL-6 and NOGGIN), increases local blood flow and nutrient delivery, and may stimulate follicles out of telogen (resting) phase.

Where to buy

No purchase required for finger massage. Silicone scalp massagers ($5-15) available at Amazon, Target, beauty supply stores.

Typical cost: $0-15 one-time

Safety notes

Avoid vigorous rubbing on inflamed, infected, or wounded scalp. Gentle pressure is sufficient - aggressive massage can worsen shedding. Start with 4 minutes daily and increase gradually.
