Scalp Massage

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Koyama et al. 2016 Eplasty (PMID 26904154) - Pilot study in 9 healthy men receiving 4 minutes of standardized daily scalp massage for 24 weeks found significant increase in hair strand thickness from baseline (0.085 mm to 0.092 mm), along with upregulation of 2,655 hair-growth-related genes in stretched dermal papilla cells.$0-35 one-time

How to use

Apply firm, circular pressure using fingertips (not fingernails) across the entire scalp for 4 minutes daily. Move in small, overlapping circles from the hairline back toward the crown. Can be done on dry scalp or during shampooing. For enhanced delivery of topical treatments (rosemary oil, etc.), massage after applying the oil.

How it works

Mechanical stretching forces applied during scalp massage activate dermal papilla cells in the subcutaneous tissue. This mechanical stimulation upregulates genes involved in hair cycle regulation, including those related to hair shaft elongation and the anagen (growth) phase. Improved local blood circulation may also enhance delivery of nutrients and oxygen to follicles.

Where to buy

HEETA Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush (~$8), Briogeo Scalp Revival Stimulating Therapy Massager (~$30), electric scalp massager (~$20-35). No special equipment required - fingertip massage is equally effective based on the study protocol.

Typical cost: $0-35 one-time

Safety notes

Avoid aggressive scratching or rubbing on inflamed, infected, or actively shedding scalp. Scalp massage will not reverse scarring alopecia or correct hormonal or nutritional causes of hair loss. The current evidence base is very limited (9-person pilot study) and results focused on hair thickness rather than density or new growth. Should be used as an adjunct, not a standalone treatment.
