Saw Palmetto Extract

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2023 Cochrane review of 27 studies found Serenoa repens improved urinary symptom scores in men with BPH, particularly at standardized extract doses.$15-$35 per month

How to use

Take 320 mg of standardized liposterolic extract (85-95% fatty acids) daily, ideally with a meal to reduce GI upset. Allow 4-6 weeks for noticeable effect.

How it works

Saw palmetto inhibits 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which drives prostate cell proliferation. It also has mild anti-inflammatory and alpha-adrenergic blocking effects that relax the bladder neck.

Where to buy

Health food stores, pharmacies, Amazon - look for brands like Nature's Answer or Jarrow Formulas with standardized extract

Typical cost: $15-$35 per month

Safety notes

May interact with blood-thinning medications. Does not reduce prostate size. Should not replace medical evaluation for rising PSA or severe urinary obstruction. Some large trials found no benefit over placebo - results vary by preparation quality.
