Saffron Extract (Affron)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Lopresti & Drummond 2017 RCT (J Affect Disord, PMID 28735826) - 6-week trial in 80 adults with mild-to-moderate depression; 28 mg/day affron saffron extract significantly reduced HDRS depression scores versus placebo (p < 0.001). Effect size comparable to low-dose antidepressants with minimal side effects.$25-$40/month.

How to use

Take 28-30 mg/day of a standardised saffron extract (affron brand or equivalent standardised to safranal/crocin content) in one or two doses with food. Effects typically emerge within 2-4 weeks.

How it works

Crocin and safranal (the active carotenoids) inhibit serotonin and dopamine reuptake, have antioxidant effects in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, and may modulate corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) to reduce HPA axis stress reactivity. Saffron also has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.

Where to buy

Naturally Botanicals Affron ($30-$40/30 capsules), Swisse Ultiboost Saffron ($25-$35) - look specifically for "affron" branded extract or products standardised to 3.5% lepticrosalides. Available online and at specialist supplement retailers.

Typical cost: $25-$40/month.

Safety notes

Generally well tolerated at clinical doses. Avoid high doses in pregnancy (saffron has uterine-stimulating properties at high doses). May interact with anticoagulants. Very high doses (5g+) are toxic - stick to standardised extracts at labelled doses.
