Rosemary Oil

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Panahi et al. 2015 (Skinmed) - RCT found 2% rosemary oil as effective as 2% minoxidil for androgenic alopecia after 6 months, with less scalp itching reported.$10-20/bottle (lasts 2-3 months)

How to use

Dilute 2-3 drops rosemary essential oil in 1 tablespoon carrier oil (jojoba or coconut). Massage into scalp for 4-5 minutes, leave on 30 minutes to overnight, then shampoo out. Use 2-3x per week consistently for at least 3-6 months.

How it works

Inhibits 5-alpha reductase (the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT), improves scalp microcirculation, and has anti-inflammatory effects on hair follicles - similar mechanism to minoxidil but with fewer reported side effects.

Where to buy

Health food stores (Whole Foods, Sprouts), Amazon. Brands: Majestic Pure, NOW Foods. Look for 100% pure therapeutic-grade oil.

Typical cost: $10-20/bottle (lasts 2-3 months)

Safety notes

Always dilute - never apply undiluted essential oil directly to scalp (can cause chemical burns). Patch test on inner arm first. Avoid during pregnancy. Keep away from eyes.
