Red Yeast Rice

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Meta-analysis of RCTs (Expert Rev Clin Pharmacol 2023, PMID 36259545) found red yeast rice reduced LDL by ~29 mg/dL and total cholesterol by ~33 mg/dL. Active compound monacolin K is chemically identical to lovastatin. Evidence is strong but quality and monacolin K content vary widely between products.$15-$40 per month for standardized extracts.

How to use

Typical doses in studies: 600-1,200 mg of standardized extract daily, taken with food. Only use products that have been third-party tested and list monacolin K content on the label.

How it works

Red yeast rice is fermented rice containing monacolin K, which inhibits HMG-CoA reductase - the same enzyme targeted by prescription statin drugs. This reduces the liver's production of cholesterol.

Where to buy

Health food stores or reputable online retailers. Look for third-party tested brands (e.g., NSF Certified or USP Verified). Many US products have had monacolin K removed due to FDA enforcement, reducing effectiveness.

Typical cost: $15-$40 per month for standardized extracts.

Safety notes

CAUTION: Monacolin K carries the same risks as prescription lovastatin - muscle pain, liver injury, and drug interactions. Do not use if you are already on a statin. Do not use during pregnancy. Avoid with grapefruit, alcohol, and CYP3A4-interacting drugs. FDA has warned that red yeast rice products with meaningful amounts of monacolin K are unapproved drugs. Consult a doctor before use.
