Pygeum (African Plum Bark Extract)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A Cochrane review of 18 RCTs (1,562 men) found pygeum africanum standardized extract improved nocturia, urinary flow rate, and residual urine volume compared to placebo (Wilt et al. 2002).$15-$30 per month

How to use

Take 100 mg once daily or 50 mg twice daily of standardized bark extract (13-14% triterpenes). Take with food. Give it at least 6-8 weeks before assessing response.

How it works

Pygeum bark contains phytosterols and triterpenes that reduce prostate stromal cell proliferation by downregulating TGF-beta-1 and FGF-2 signaling. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces bladder contractility, easing urge symptoms.

Where to buy

Online retailers and natural health stores - look for brands like NOW Foods or Solaray with standardized extract (13% total sterols)

Typical cost: $15-$30 per month

Safety notes

Mild GI side effects possible. Not recommended as sole therapy for significant urinary obstruction. Sourcing practices matter - look for sustainably certified pygeum as overharvesting has threatened wild populations.
