Psyllium Fiber Supplement
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 5-10 g of psyllium husk powder (e.g. Metamucil) mixed in a full glass of water (250 ml) once or twice daily. Take at the same time each day and always with plenty of fluid to prevent choking or obstruction. Allow 1-3 days to notice softer stools.
How it works
Psyllium is a soluble fiber that absorbs water and forms a gel in the gut, softening stool and increasing bulk. Softer, well-formed stools reduce straining during defecation, which is the primary mechanical driver of hemorrhoidal engorgement, prolapse, and trauma.
Where to buy
Pharmacies and supermarkets (Metamucil, Fybogel, store-brand psyllium husk). Available as powder, capsule, or wafer forms.
Typical cost: $10-$20 per month.
Safety notes
Always take with a full glass of water - dry psyllium can swell in the throat and cause choking. Start with a low dose and increase gradually to avoid gas and bloating. Not suitable for people with difficulty swallowing or bowel obstruction. May slow absorption of some medications - take 1-2 hours apart.
