Psyllium Fiber
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Mix 5-10 g of psyllium husk powder in a large glass of water once or twice daily before meals. Start with 5 g and increase gradually to reduce bloating. Take with at least 240 mL of water to prevent choking.
How it works
Psyllium is a viscous soluble fiber that forms a gel in the intestine, binding bile acids and cholesterol and preventing their reabsorption. This forces the liver to draw LDL from the blood to make new bile acids.
Where to buy
Pharmacy, grocery store, or online. Look for Metamucil (Procter & Gamble) or generic psyllium husk powder. Capsule forms are also available.
Typical cost: $10-$20 for a 1-2 month supply.
Safety notes
Take with plenty of water - dry powder can cause choking or esophageal obstruction. May reduce absorption of some medications; take psyllium at least 2 hours away from any oral medication. Can cause bloating and gas, especially in the first week.
