Psyllium Husk Fiber

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A meta-analysis of 21 RCTs in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found psyllium supplementation lowered LDL cholesterol by 0.278 mmol/L with a significant dose-response relationship.$10-$20 per month

How to use

Mix 5-10 g of psyllium husk powder into 8 oz of water and drink immediately before or with meals, one to two times daily. Always follow with an additional full glass of water to prevent choking.

How it works

Psyllium forms a viscous gel in the gut that binds bile acids - cholesterol-derived compounds secreted into the intestine. The bound bile acids are excreted rather than reabsorbed, forcing the liver to draw LDL cholesterol from the blood to synthesize replacement bile acids.

Where to buy

Metamucil (major pharmacies and grocery stores), or bulk psyllium husk powder from Amazon, Bob's Red Mill, or health food stores.

Typical cost: $10-$20 per month

Safety notes

Take with adequate water to avoid choking or intestinal blockage. Start with a small dose to minimize gas and bloating. May slow absorption of medications - take supplements 1-2 hours apart from other medications.
