Prickly Pear Extract (Opuntia ficus-indica)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Wiese et al. (n=55 completers) double-blind crossover RCT: OFI extract taken 5 hours before drinking halved the risk of severe hangover (OR=0.38; 95% CI 0.16-0.88; p=0.02); nausea, dry mouth, and anorexia significantly improved (all p<0.05). CRP was 40% higher in placebo arm. PMID 15226168.$15-$30 per month (or per occasion if used as needed)

How to use

Take 1600 IU of a standardised Opuntia ficus-indica fruit extract approximately 4-5 hours before you begin drinking. Timing before alcohol consumption is essential - it does not appear effective if taken after.

How it works

Opuntia ficus-indica is rich in flavonoids, betacyanins, and betalains that inhibit nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) activation. Alcohol triggers an inflammatory surge; blunting this response reduces the nausea, anorexia, and dry mouth associated with the hangover.

Where to buy

Health food stores and online. Available as 'Nopal' or prickly pear standardised extract capsules. Brands include Nature's Way Nopal and Zeo Health.

Typical cost: $15-$30 per month (or per occasion if used as needed)

Safety notes

May mildly lower blood glucose - caution in diabetics on medication. May interact with medications for diabetes or cholesterol. Prickly pear is not a substitute for drinking responsibly or staying hydrated.
