Plant Sterols & Stanols

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Meta-analysis of 124 RCTs (Br J Nutr 2014, PMID 24780090) found 0.6-3.3 g/day of plant sterols or stanols reduces LDL by 6-12%. The FDA authorized a qualified health claim in 2000 for plant sterols/stanols and reduced coronary heart disease risk.$15-$30 per month for supplements; fortified foods vary by product.

How to use

Consume 2 g of plant sterols or stanols per day from fortified foods (e.g., Benecol spreads, fortified orange juice, or supplement capsules). Split into two servings taken with meals for best effect.

How it works

Plant sterols and stanols are structurally similar to cholesterol. They compete with dietary cholesterol for absorption in the intestine, reducing the amount of cholesterol that enters the bloodstream.

Where to buy

Fortified margarines (Benecol, Flora ProActiv), fortified orange juice, or standalone supplement capsules available at pharmacies and health food stores.

Typical cost: $15-$30 per month for supplements; fortified foods vary by product.

Safety notes

Generally well tolerated. High doses (above 3 g/day) offer little additional benefit and may reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and carotenoids. Not recommended during pregnancy. Not a replacement for dietary changes or statins in high-risk individuals.
