Pelargonium sidoides (EPs 7630)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take EPs 7630 liquid extract (30 drops in water) or tablets 3 times daily between meals at the first sign of acute bronchitis. Continue for 7 days. Follow package directions for children's weight-adjusted dosing. The root extract is the studied form - not the whole plant.
How it works
EPs 7630 contains coumarins (umckalin, scopoletin) and polyphenols that act through multiple pathways: direct antiviral activity against influenza and rhinovirus, immunomodulation via increased interferon production, antibacterial activity preventing secondary infection, and secretolytic effects that facilitate sputum clearance.
Where to buy
Umcka (Nature's Way) is the primary branded product in North American pharmacies and online. Kaloba is the European branded equivalent. Look specifically for Pelargonium sidoides root extract, not other pelargonium species.
Typical cost: $12-$20 for a 100 ml bottle sufficient for one treatment course.
Safety notes
Rare reports of liver injury with prolonged use - limit to 7-10 days for acute bronchitis as studied. May interact with immunosuppressants. Avoid if you have a liver condition or are taking warfarin. Not studied in pregnancy. Some patients experience gastrointestinal upset.
