Energy Pacing (Activity Management)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Track your energy envelope daily on a 1-10 scale. Identify your personal energy threshold and stay 20-30% below it consistently. Use a heart rate monitor - keep HR under 110 bpm or below your anaerobic threshold. Rest before feeling exhausted (pre-emptive rest). Gradually increase activity by no more than 10% per week only when stable.
How it works
Post-exertional malaise (PEM) - the hallmark of post-viral fatigue - occurs when cellular energy demand exceeds impaired mitochondrial output, triggering an immune and oxidative cascade that worsens symptoms for days. Pacing prevents this crash-cycle and allows mitochondria to partially recover.
Where to buy
No purchase needed. Optional: heart rate monitor (Polar H10, $80-$100), Visible app (free tier available).
Typical cost: $0 (free) or $10-$20/month with monitoring app
Safety notes
Traditional graded exercise therapy (GET) is controversial for post-viral fatigue and may worsen post-exertional malaise in some patients - distinguish pacing from GET. Work with a physiotherapist experienced in ME/CFS or long COVID.
