Omega-3 Fish Oil (EPA + DHA)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 2-4 g/day of combined EPA + DHA from concentrated fish oil capsules or liquid, taken with the largest meal of the day to improve absorption and reduce fishy reflux. Standard 1,000 mg fish oil capsules contain only 300 mg EPA+DHA - check the nutrition panel for actual EPA+DHA content and choose high-concentration products. Allow 6-12 weeks for measurable CRP reduction.
How it works
EPA and DHA compete with arachidonic acid for COX and LOX enzymes, reducing synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins (PGE2) and leukotrienes (LTB4). They also serve as precursors for specialized pro-resolving mediators - resolvins, protectins, and maresins - that actively switch off the inflammatory cascade rather than simply suppressing it.
Where to buy
Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Carlson Super Omega-3, and Thorne Omega-3 are well-tested concentrated options available at pharmacies, Costco, iHerb, and Amazon. Look for IFOS or NSF certification.
Typical cost: $25-50/month for a therapeutic 2-4 g EPA+DHA dose
Safety notes
Doses above 3 g/day total omega-3 may prolong bleeding time - consult a doctor if taking warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or any anticoagulant, and before surgery. Fish-derived - check for fish allergy; algae-based omega-3 is a suitable vegan alternative. May have a modest blood-pressure-lowering effect. Store in the refrigerator to prevent oxidation.
