Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA + DHA)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 1,000-3,000 mg combined EPA + DHA daily with food. Triglyceride-form fish oil is better absorbed than ethyl ester form. Divide into two doses to minimise fishy aftertaste. Allow 8-12 weeks before assessing benefit. For meibomian gland dysfunction-related dry eye, warm eyelid compresses used alongside omega-3 supplementation improve outcomes.
How it works
EPA and DHA incorporate into meibomian gland secretions and lacrimal gland cell membranes, modulating the production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids. They reduce conjunctival inflammation, improve the lipid layer of the tear film (reducing evaporation), and upregulate anti-inflammatory resolvins and protectins. Meibomian gland dysfunction - the leading cause of dry eye - is particularly responsive.
Where to buy
Nordic Naturals ProOmega 2000 and Carlson Elite Omega-3 Gems are high-quality triglyceride-form options. PRN Dry Eye Omega Benefits is a dry-eye-specific pharmaceutical-grade formula used in clinical trials. Available at iHerb, Amazon, Costco, and health food stores. Look for IFOS 5-star certification for purity.
Typical cost: $20-$55 per month depending on dose and brand; PRN Dry Eye formula runs $55-$70/month
Safety notes
Omega-3s at doses above 2,000 mg/day have anticoagulant effects - use with caution if taking warfarin, clopidogrel, apixaban, rivaroxaban, aspirin, or other antiplatelet/anticoagulant medications, as bleeding risk may increase. Those with fish or shellfish allergies should use algae-derived DHA/EPA instead. Discontinue at least 1 week before elective surgery.
